From Proto-Germanic *nakwadaz, from Proto-Indo-European *nogʷo- (bare, naked). Compare Old Frisian naked, Old Dutch nakot, Old High German nackut, Old Norse nǫkkviðr, Gothic 𐌽𐌰𐌵𐌰𐌸𐍃 (naqaþs); related to nacian "to strip clothes".
