From Middle English *nayllees, from Old English *næġllēas, from Proto-West Germanic *naglalaus, from Proto-Germanic *naglalausaz, equivalent to nail +‎ -less. Cognate with Middle Low German nāgellôs (nailless), Dutch nagelloos (nailless), German nagellos (nailless), Icelandic naglalaus (nailless).
