Etymology[edit]

Coined by the Hawaiian Lexicon Committee in 2002 as a 'borrowing' (simulating the expected changes had the word been inherited) from the reconstruction Proto-Polynesian *ngarara (lizard) (compare Maori ngārara (lizard)).
