Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Ottoman Turkish نرده (nerde, where, in what place)[1] (alternatively نره‌ده (nerede)), locative of Ottoman Turkish نره (nere, what place, what part), from نه‌ (ne, what) +‎ ارا (ara, space or place between two things), equivalent to ne +‎ ara,[2] from Proto-Turkic *nē- (what).[3] Cognate with Turkmen nirede.
