Etymology[edit]
Inherited from Ottoman Turkish اوروج (oruc, “fasting, sawm”), from Persian روزه (ruze, “fasting”).

oruç (definite accusative orucu, plural oruçlar)
- (in general) fasting, abstinence or mortification for religious reasons, especially abstinence from food
- (specifically) sawm, saum, the ritual practice of fasting and the third of the five pillars of Islam
