overhead crane (plural overhead cranes)

  1. A crane used in industry with a steel bridge mounted on a runway at either end, and a hoist which travels along the bridge.
    • 1962 August, “Talking of Trains: New diesel depot at Cardiff”, in Modern Railways, page 88:
      A two-track bay at the northern side will be equipped with an overhead crane for handling locomotive engines, etc.
