Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Vulgar Latin pullicella, of disputed origin. Possibly a diminutive of Latin pullus (young of animals, chick). Alternatively from Latin puella (girl) through a Vulgar Latin root *puellicella. Cognate with French pucelle.
