Etymology[edit]

From Middle English *poukel, *pukel, from Old English pūcel (a goblin, demon, a mischievous spirit), diminutive of pūca (demon, goblin, imp), equivalent to puck +‎ -le. Cognate with Danish pokker (devil, deuce). More at puck.
