Albanian[edit]

Etymology 1[edit]

Borrowed from Latin rēgem,[1] accusative of rex. Ultimately a doublet of rig.

Noun[edit]

regj m (plural regjër)

  1. king
    Synonym: mbret

Etymology 2[edit]

From Proto-Albanian *raugja, with an original meaning 'to smoke', thus related to Old Norse reykr and Old High German rouh (smoke).[2] Alternatively from Proto-Albanian *(e)reug-, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁rewg- (to retch, vomit). Cognate to Ancient Greek ἐρεύγομαι (ereúgomai, to belch, gurk).[3]

Verb[edit]

regj (aorist regja, participle regjur)

  1. to tan (hides), to salt, to clean
