Etymology[edit]
From Old Swedish (i.e. a loanword before 1541), originally from a Celtic word, from Gaulish *ruskā, from Proto-Celtic *rūskos (“bark”).
Cognate with French ruche (“beehive”) and German Reuse (“fish-trap”), as well as Danish ruse (“fish trap”) and Norwegian Bokmål ruse (“fish trap”)

One of very few words where the /ɧ/ sound is spelled ⟨ssj⟩. The other three are hyssja, hässja and ässja.
