From Old Norse skemta, from either Proto-Germanic *skammatjaną or Proto-Germanic *skammitōną. Cognate with Faroese skemta, Norwegian Nynorsk skjemta, Icelandic skemmta, and Danish skæmte. Equivalent to skämt (joke) +‎ -a.
