Uncertain, but related to Breton sell (“look”) and Old Irish sellaid (“sees”).[1]

Despite being written with ⟨y⟩, the vowel here is usually pronounced /ɪ/, because the final ⟨w⟩ was formerly non-syllabic.[2]
