From Middle High German sēr, from Old High German sēr (sore, painful), from Proto-Germanic *sairaz. Cognate with German sehr (very), Dutch zeer (very; painful), English sore. The semantic development is “sore, painful” → “violent, powerful” → “fast, quick”.
