Swedish[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Same as Old Swedish töva, cognate with Norwegian, Danish and Old Danish tøve, from Middle Low German toven (wait, delay, obstruct)

It seems Old Swedish made a difference between töva and tövra, the latter derived from Middle Low German togern and German zögern

töva (present tövar, preterite tövade, supine tövat, imperative töva)

  1. to delay, to linger
