From Middle Dutch, from Proto-Germanic *tarwō (whence also English tare), from Proto-Indo-European *dr̥Hu̯ā (whence also Welsh drewg ‘darnel’, Lithuanian dirvà ‘field’, Ancient Greek δάρατος (dáratos) ‘bread’, Sanskrit दूर्वा (dūrvā) ‘panic grass, millet’).
