From Proto-Germanic *daigaz, whence also Old English dāh, dāg, Old Norse deig and Gothic 𐌳𐌰𐌹𐌲𐍃 (daigs). Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *dʰeiǵʰ- (to knead, to mold, to form), *dʰeyǵʰ-. [1] [2]
