Vietnamese[edit]
Pronunciation[edit]
Etymology 1[edit]
Sino-Vietnamese word from 實, perhaps a southern misreading of thật where the final /t/ was swapped out for the /k/, typical of the southern tendency to swap out final alveolars for velars. Compare the readings of 日 (nhật, nhựt). Doublet of thật and thiệt.
Adjective[edit]
thực
Usage notes[edit]
- Thật, thiệt and thực are effectively alternative readings of the same grapheme, but they are preferred in different compounds or expressions. For example, use nói thật, not *nói thực; but use thực tiễn, not *thật tiễn.
