Etymology[edit]
Likely from Middle Chinese 清 (MC tshjeng), thus non-Sino-Vietnamese reading of Chinese 清 (“quiet, still”, SV: thanh).
Compare tầm thinh vs. tầm thanh, both meaning "to seek out sounds [i.e. the cries of suffering sentient beings] (Buddhism)" and from 尋聲 (MC zim syeng).
