Vietnamese[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Likely from Middle Chinese (MC tshjeng), thus non-Sino-Vietnamese reading of Chinese (quiet, still, SV: thanh).

Compare tầm thinh vs. tầm thanh, both meaning "to seek out sounds [i.e. the cries of suffering sentient beings] (Buddhism)" and from 尋聲 (MC zim syeng).

Pronunciation[edit]

Adjective[edit]

thinh (, , , , 𤇂)

  1. (only in compounds) silent, speechless
