Etymology 2[edit]
Sino-Vietnamese word from 聽 (“to listen”).
Its Middle Chinese ancestor 聽 (MC theng) "to listen" would have yielded regularly SV reflex **thinh; this attested reflex, with sắc-tone (which suggests a Middle Chinese ancestor with departing tone & unvoiced initial), possibly has arisen from confusion with 聽 (MC thengH) "to administer, to adjudicate", which had departing tone.
