Particularly: “GPC doesn't give an etymology. This looks like it's from Proto-Indo-European *tenk- (“to thicken, be solid”), perhaps from an intermediate with form similar to *ténkl̥-. If so, then cognate with Persian تلخ (talx, “bitter”), Sanskrit तञ्च् (tañc, “to contract, coagulate”), तक्र (takra, “buttermilk mixed with (a third part of) water”), Lithuanian tánkus (“thick, dense”), and Icelandic þél (“buttermilk”).”
