Etymology[edit]

From Ottoman Turkish یارپوز (yarpuz, pennyroyal),[1] from a derivation of Proto-Turkic *yal- (name of different types of grass).[2] Cognate with Kyrgyz жалбыз (jalbız, mint), Uzbek yalpiz (mint), Kazakh жалбыз (jalbyz, mint), etc.
