Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Proto-Tupi-Guarani *ɨβak (sky), from Proto-Tupian *ɨpʷa (high).[1] Doublet of yvate. The sense of heaven is a semantic loan from Spanish cielo.

Cognate with Old Tupi ybaka.
