From older *gluar, from Proto-Albanian *gluuē, from the participle of verb zgjoj. Compare Old Norse gløggr (clear, bright, distinct, painstaking, stingy), Gothic glaggwō (right, precise), Old Church Slavic glagolǔ (word).
