Bashkir

Etymology

Perhaps adapted from Persian حالا (hâlâ, “now”), from Arabic حَالًا (ḥālan, “now”).

Cognate with Kazakh әлі (älı, “still, yet”), Kyrgyz али (ali, “still, as yet; just now”), Kumyk гьали (hali, “now; still, yet”), Uzbek hali (“still, yet”), Uyghur ھېلى (hëli, “still, yet, recently”).

әле • (əle)

1. now, at present
2. just now, very recently, a moment ago
3. as yet
4. with negation or interrogative verb forms (not) yet, still (not)

   Ул ваҡытта Яхъя төрмәгә ябылмағайны әле. (John 3:24)

   Ul vaqıtta Yaxʺya törməgə yabılmağaynı əle.

   At that time, John was not yet put in prison.

Particle

әле • (əle) (placed after verb)

1. after optative/imperative verb forms: a modal particle connoting a wish or kind request; please
2. after non-past indicative verb forms: indicates that the action has not completed and will continue in the near future

   Ултырам әле.

   Ultıram əle.

   I will sit a little bit more.

3. after past indicative verb forms or the particle һуң: connotes surprise or regret
4. after present indicative verb forms or the particle бит: connotes surprise, doubt or hesitation
