Mongolian

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Cognate with Kalmyk өрә (örä, room, a half of a yurt) with several possible explanations:

  • Deriving from the same root as өрөөл (örööl, half, one of a pair), өрөөсөн (öröösön, odd, unpaired), originally denoting a half of a yurt.
  • From the same root as өр (ör, interior, heart).
  • өрөх (öröx, to arrange, to lay) +‎ -өө(н) (-öö(n)), unlikely due to lack of -n in Kalmyk.

Noun

өрөө (öröö) (Mongolian spelling ᠥᠷᠦᠭᠡ (örüge) or ᠡᠷᠦᠭᠡ (erüge), definite plural өрөөнүүд); (hidden-n declension)
