According to Martirosyan perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *wól-ih₂. Related to գաղջ (gałǰ) and cognate with Lithuanian vìldyti (to chill, let something cool), Proto-Germanic *wallaną, whence Gothic 𐍅𐌿𐌻𐌰𐌽 (wulan, well up, boil over), Old Norse vella (to wall over, boil), Old English weallan.
