Old Armenian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

An Iranian borrowing: compare Parthian 𐫡𐫀𐫉 (rʾz /rāz/), Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (lʾc /rāz/), 𐫡𐫀𐫉 (rʾz /rāz/), Persian راز (râz, secret, mystery). For the sense development compare Classical Syriac ܐܪܙܐ (ʾərāzā) with closer meanings, from the same Iranian source. ե- (e-) is a prothetic vowel like in երէզ (erēz).
