Etymology[edit]

From Arabic مَتْن (matn, “ridge”), whence also Ottoman Turkish متن (metn, “a high and rocky ridge”), Persian متن (matn, “a hard piece of ground”).

Some dictionaries incorrectly lemmatize the plural մատներ (matner) as a separate and unrelated word.

Etymology[edit]

The origin is uncertain. Perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *mh₁-d-, from *meh₁- (“to measure”), and cognate with the Celtic word for “thumb”; compare Breton meud, Welsh bawd (“thumb”).
