Ultimately, as Classical Syriac ܓܨܐ (gaṣṣā, gypsum) and Middle Persian gc (gač, gypsum) > Persian گچ (gač, gypsum), from Akkadian 𒅎𒌓 (IM.BABBAR /⁠gaṣṣu⁠/, gypsum).
