Arabic[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From the root ق ط ف (q-ṭ-f), from Proto-Semitic *qaṭap-. Compare Aramaic קְטַף / ܩܛܲܦ (qṭap̄), Hebrew קָטַף (qāṭáp̄), Akkadian 𒋡𒋫𒁍 (qa-ta-pu /qatāpu/). The saltbush name must be from Classical Syriac ܩܲܛܦܵܐ (qaṭəp̄ā), ܩܛܵܦܵܐ (qəṭāp̄ā, saltbush),[1][2] for it mirrors its vocalization.
