Etymology

From the root م ح ق (m-ḥ-q). Compare Hebrew מָחַק (māḥaq).

  1. to efface, to blot out, to destroy, to annihilate, to ruin
  2. to burn, to scorch
  3. to withdraw one's blessing from, to render unfortunate
