From Proto-Tai *C̥.dwiːtᴰ (“sunshine”). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨯᩯ᩠ᨯ, Lao ແດດ (dǣt), Lü ᦶᦡᧆᧈ (ḋaed¹), Shan လႅတ်ႇ (lèt), Ahom 𑜓𑜢𑜄𑜫 (dit) or 𑜃𑜢𑜄𑜫 (nit), Nong Zhuang nded.
