From Old Japanese. First attested in the Kojiki of 712 CE. See noun 黒 for details.

This adjective was rendered in Old Japanese following ク活用 (ku katsuyō, “-ku conjugation”). Over time this shifted to an -i adjective, via the 連用形 (rentaikei, “attributive form”) of such, as all other -ku adjectives.
