From Old Japanese. First attested in the Kojiki of 712 CE.[1] See noun for details.

This adjective was rendered in Old Japanese following ク活用 (ku katsuyō, -ku conjugation). Over time this shifted to an -i adjective, via the 連用形 (rentaikei, attributive form) of such, as all other -ku adjectives.
