Not really uncertain etymology; we have the cultivated, urbanized, inhabited idea as in the present Turkish and peace and harmony and such are all such gay conditions, or brought about through capitulation/civilization of a foreign people, denoted by the same word family. Only through the lens and filter of Modern English terms it appears otherwise. The diphthongiziation is typical for Syriac specifically as opposed to other Middle Aramaic isolects. undo
