French
[edit]Alternative forms
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Inherited from Middle French Egypte, from Old French Egypte, borrowed from Latin Aegyptus, from Ancient Greek Αἴγυπτος (Aíguptos).
Pronunciation
[edit]Proper noun
[edit]Égypte f
- Egypt (a country in North Africa and Western Asia)
Usage notes
[edit]- In older French practice, capital letters did not take diacritics, so É becomes E. This was mostly done because of technical constraints. Formal orthotypography maintains the diacritics.
