Icelandic

Etymology

From Old Norse ábóti, a term borrowed, likely via Old English abbod, from Latin abbās (abbot), itself from Ancient Greek ἀββᾶς (abbâs), from Aramaic אבא (’abbā, father). Compare the (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Old Norse variants abbáti, abbati, which may come more directly from Latin or be under stronger influence from it, or hail from the (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Old English variants abbat, abbad, rather than abbod. Compare also abbadís (abbess) and abba.
