From Middle French escouter, from Old French escouter, from Latin auscultō (to listen). Doublet of ausculter. Compare English auscultate (borrowed from Latin) and English scout (borrowed from Old French), Italian ascoltare, Cauca escoltar, Spanish escuchar and Romanian asculta.
