From Old Swedish ivirvald, from Old Norse yfirvald, equivalent to över (“over”) +‎ våld (“violence”). Cognate with Norwegian Bokmål overvold, Danish overvold, Icelandic yfirvald (“authority”), German Obergewalt (“supremacy”).
