Etymology[edit]

Coined by Turkish writer, poet and literary critic Nurullah Ataç, perhaps first in the form *özügür [1]. From the combination of öz (self) and gür, the second part possibly influenced by Arabic حُرّ(ḥurr, free, unimpeded)[2].
