Etymology

[edit]

From Middle Low German ȫver. The diphthong /y̆œ/ continues the umlaut of Old Saxon o-. The form is thus from a merger of Proto-West Germanic *obar and *ubiri (that is, **obiri). The variants uover /ˈu̯ɔvər/ and üever /ˈyə̯vər/ reflect the regular outcomes of both forms respectively.
