From Old Norse þroti (swelling, tumour), related to Old Norse þrútinn (swollen), þrútna (to swell up, become overconfident), ultimately from Proto-Germanic *þrūtaną (to swell), possibly from Proto-Indo-European *trewd- (to push). Cognate with Old English þrūtian (to swell with pride or anger).
