Inherited from Old Polish łotr, from Middle High German lotter, from Old High German lotar (vain; void; insignificant). Ultimately from Proto-Germanic *ludraz (useless; worthless; bad). Compare Old English loddere. See also Czech lotr, Russian ло́дырь (lódyrʹ).
