[edit]Inherited from Old Polish łotr, from Middle High German lotter, from Old High German lotar (“vain; void; insignificant”). Ultimately from Proto-Germanic *ludraz (“useless; worthless; bad”). Compare Old English loddere. See also Czech lotr, Russian ло́дырь (lódyrʹ).
