Etymology

. From Λᾰ́κων (Lákōn, “Laconian”) +‎ -ῐ́ᾱ (-íā), of uncertain origin. According to one opinion it is a shortened form of Λᾰκεδαίμων. According to another, it is an Illyrian word. Compare to Lacinium , in Greek: Λακίνιον.
