Etymology

Has been proposed to derive from ἄγχι (ánkhi, “near”) or ἄγχω (ánkhō, “I squeeze, strangle”) + ὤψ (ṓps, “eye”). Beekes argues for a Pre-Greek origin; compare αἰγίλωψ (aigílōps) in the sense of “lachrymal fistula”.
