Ancient Greek

Etymology

Unknown. The word has been connected with αἰών (aiṓn, lifetime) and Sanskrit आयु (āyu, life, vital force) (< *h₂óyu), but this is formally improbable. Alternatively may be from Proto-Hellenic *walwólos, from Proto-Indo-European *welwel-, from the root *wel- (to turn).
