Etymology

From (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Indo-European *bʰelH- (white). Cognate with Proto-Slavic *bolto (swamp), Romanian baltă (mud, swamp) and Albanian baltë (mud). Often considered an Illyrian substratum word.
