Etymology[edit]

From Old Persian *bātiyaka (literally phiale), from *bāta (wine, must),[1] whence also Middle Persian bʾtk' (bādag, wine, must). Compare Persian بادیه (bâdiye, large bowl). Furnée compares βάτος (bátos, measure for liquids).
