Cognate with βιβρώσκω ‎(bibrṓskō, I eat), from Proto-Indo-European *gʷerh₃-. Cognates include Sanskrit गिरति ‎(girati), Old Armenian կեր ‎(ker, food) and կոկորդ ‎(kokord, throat), and Latin vorō.
