Etymology

Learned borrowing from Ancient Greek *ἐπιβι(ῶ) + -ώνω (-óno), the former, of -όω (-óō) conjugation, attested in the aorist form ἐπεβίων (epebíōn, I continued to live) of *ἐπιβιόω "to live over", from ἐπι- (epi-) +‎ βιόω (bióō), with semantic loan from French survivre and English survive.[1]
