Etymology

[edit]

Plural form of ζευγίτης, two origins have been suggested. The first from ζεῦγος (zeûgos, pair of yoked animals) a reference to the class' ability to upkeep two oxen. The second from ζευγίτης (zeugítēs, soldiers in the same rank), as individuals from this class served together in the phalanx. [1]
